Maybe we want to feel calmer, more connected, less reactive, or simply more like ourselves again. That’s where goal setting often comes in. But for many of us, goals can start to feel like pressure instead of support.

Incorporating mindfulness allows us to move forward in a gentle and intentional way.

Rather than asking, “What should I be doing differently?”, mindfulness encourages us to first ask, “What’s actually happening right now?” With these two questions, goals become less about fixing ourselves and more about caring for ourselves.

Mindfulness: Starting Where You Are

Mindfulness isn’t about clearing your mind or being calm all the time. It’s about noticing your thoughts, emotions, body sensations, and patterns without judgment.

This awareness matters because goals set without self-awareness often come from comparison, guilt, or exhaustion. Goals rooted in mindfulness tend to come from clarity and compassion.

Reframing Goals as Intentions

Traditional goal setting can be very focused on the end: do more, fix this, achieve that. A mindful approach shifts the focus to how we want to relate to ourselves along the way.

Instead of:
“I need to stop being so anxious.”

Consider:
“I want to build skills that help me respond to anxiety with more patience.”

These kinds of goals leave room for being human.

Written by Cheryl Phillips

Personal finance. Budgeting. Savings. Expenses. For many people, these words and the concepts behind them trigger visceral, emotional reactions. Often, these reactions are explained away with “If I had more money, I wouldn’t feel so anxious about financial matters”. While increased income may ease some financial burdens, there is usually greater work to be done than just finding ways to make extra cash.

The good news: you can change your relationship with money. It doesn’t have to be a “necessary evil” in life. Paying bills doesn’t have to be a dreadful box to check off your to-do list. Improving your relationship with money is something that is often never given a second, or even a first, thought. However, learning the why behind our money decisions can be both empowering and helpful for cultivating a purposeful philosophy and strategy around finance.

Take a pause.
Take a breath.

Often, the act of speaking out loud about money is treated as a taboo, an unacceptable topic of discussion. Learning to be open and honest about your thoughts, worries, and celebrations around money opens the door to altering how we treat financial topics.

Part of the work to be done around healing your relationship with money begins by defining wealth on an individual level. While there seems to be a stereotypical vision of what wealth looks like, when you sit back and deeply consider what it means to you to be “wealthy”, you might be surprised by what you find. For some people, wealth and success are defined by a large house and a nice car. For others, it means being able to support and spend quality time with family. For others still, a life of wealth is one that brings peace, comfort, and deep connection. Learning to set goals that actually reflect your desires is a huge step in re-creating your money relationship.

It’s also important to recognize that each of us have both hard-wired and learned behaviors. This is true in all aspects of life, and that includes money matters. When we are feeling emotionally heightened, as many of us are prone to when discussing finances, our hard-wired behaviors have a tendency to take over. When this happens, our brains enter auto-pilot mode, and our decision-making process is skewed. We act in ways that feel like self-preservation in the moment, often avoiding the issue, becoming angry or defensive towards it, or minimizing the impact of it. However, in order to make decisions that promote longevity and practicality in financial decision making, it’s important to learn to recognize those hard-wired reactions and learned behaviors from childhood and take conscious steps to act in accordance with your goals and values.

Taking steps towards transparency around money, to define your goals, and to recognize your learned and hard-wired behaviors are all vital to improving your money relationship. Simply cultivating a loving awareness of your habits can be eye opening and inspire real change. If you are seeking a refreshing and new understanding of managing your financial life, start here.

For example, a better goal might be: “I will eat salad three times per week for lunch for 1 month.” Then, you can re-evaluate and adjust your goals as needed.

Identify what motivates you.
What is the why behind your goal? Dig deep to find out what is true and unique for you even if it’s not glamorous. I once had a mentor who claimed her motivation to live a healthy life was fear that her husband would remarry and another women would spend her hard earned money! What is your unique motivator? Connect with this. Visualize how meeting your goals will impact what motivates you, especially when you find yourself losing steam.

Know your barriers and make plans for overcoming the obstacles that stand in your way.
You likely already know what stands in the way of your success. Make a list of what barriers you anticipate limiting your progress and prepare in advance specifically how you will prevent these barriers and/or address them when they arise.

Don’t set it and forget it!
Regularly assess the progress you’ve made towards reaching your goals (or lack thereof) and make adjustments as needing using the suggestions provided in Tip #1. It’s helpful to schedule check-ins in advance.

Practice self-compassion.
Carl Rogers famously said, “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” Sometimes it’s the negative self-talk that stands in our way more than anything else! Take a deep breath, acknowledge how hard it is to change well-worn patterns of behavior, know you are not alone in your struggle, and cut yourself some slack. Ironically, you may find that this change in attitude frees you up to actually move in a positive direction towards your goal!

Reach out to KKJ if you’d like professional support in reaching your goals – we are here to help.

growth. Profit isn’t just about money. Profit occurs when you exchange
something you value less for something you value more. It could be time.

One could also obtain a doctorate in forensic psychology or criminology; however, those programs are not accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA). In the field of psychology in general, it is important to choose an APA-approved program. A law degree in addition to a doctorate in psychology is a useful combination, and some programs offer dual-doctorate programs in law and psychology. One can also obtain a master’s degree in Forensic Psychology and then go on to obtain their doctorate. Although any of these approaches can prepare you for a career in forensic psychology, issues of funding may be important in your choice. Although there is variability, Ph.D. programs are more likely to provide tuition support and a stipend for graduate students than Psy.D. or master’s degree programs.

There are different types of forensic psychology jobs! Some work in government agencies, prisons, or mental health facilities, but many work in private practice, diagnosing mental health conditions or evaluating competency in legal cases. They also consult with attorneys and judges about psychological issues or regarding sentencing.

It is important to understand that there are different areas of forensic psychology, too. This can include family law, child protective services, immigration, adoption, criminal, personal injury, worker’s compensation, and disability.

It can be very stressful work. You are working in a situation where people are often trying to disprove your work, and not everyone has the same goal for a client or a case.

In many areas of forensic psychological practice, much of your time is spent reading files, reports, and other related documents. You may also be asked to write reports. An important aspect of most, if not all, forensic work is a commitment to keeping current on research, case law, and changes in the field.

It is important to assess the quality of any graduate program carefully. Ask about how students find these placements, and also ask how many students are successfully placed. If a program cannot answer these questions to your satisfaction, consider whether that program is right for you. To be a skilled forensic psychologist, you must first learn and apply general clinical skills. That said, you will need to actively participate in your program’s placement activities and do all that is recommended. It is a good idea to ask directly if the program has current relationships with practicum sites in the types of settings you are looking for (prisons, detention center, court-mandated treatment, etc.). Many programs are open to developing new practicum site opportunities, but this can be a long and difficult process depending on institutional rules.

This is a very interesting lecture series by Fred Kofman that demonstrates how important psychology is to the general public. While much of his discussions seem basic, it’s clear how much the world needs the influence of psychology.

I learned about Fred Kofman’s lectures when I was listening to Sheryl Sandberg’s audio book, Lean In. One of the underlying themes of her book is the need for industry to be more collaborative and understanding of the needs of all workers. Mr. Kofman discusses how every industry should understand that products and services are better when people work collaboratively. Yet, people are encouraged to be competitive, and, therefore, are not aware how they are impeding their own growth. Fred Kofman’s lectures emphasize that in order to have a successful business, you must develop a collaborative workplace. This does not mean there is never conflict, but that people must learn to work as teams, communicate effectively, approach versus avoid conflict, and address issues assertively rather than aggressively. He also discusses making a mindset shift from being ‘right’ to being curious; this is something that really resonated with me given my interest and training in mindfulness-based approaches.

Mr. Kofman focuses on the need for people to develop their own “consciousness” (awareness) about their thoughts, feelings and behavior. If you struggle working within big industries or professions that are culturally aggressive, this concept can help develop better communication skills, reduce emotional reactivity, and lend towards better problem solving. Much of what he discusses addresses how we function on automatic pilot. And, without directly referencing different modes of treatment, he pulls concepts based in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

He challenges the listener to evaluate their belief system, modify their behavior, be fully aware of how one’s emotions motivate behavior, and how to live by one’s values and adhere to one’s virtues. Mr. Kofman discusses the need for a workplace to be a conscious team that shares everything that everybody knows, rather than being proprietary or territorial, at least within the same business. This includes understanding the company’s purpose, feelings and thoughts about the mission of the company, and individual desires and shared vision. Mr. Kofman suggests that individuals within companies need to learn to make decisions that meet the higher purpose of the business as well as each individual’s needs. I.e. if the company wants you to do something that contradicts your own values or integrity, a person should make that known. This includes making and keeping commitments and having some long-term perspective. He proposes a shift from an individualistic mindset, and a winner versus loser mentality, to a more collectivist approach.

Mr. Kofman discusses the ethics of virtuous versus vicious behavior. He describes happiness as a process of enjoying the experience of all parts of life, good and bad. He encourages the listener to take responsibility and action versus being a victim who blames others. He focuses on honesty, humility, respect, compassion, kindness, integrity, equanimity, and personal discipline.

Mr. Kofman encourages the listener to look past being right and the feeling of self-righteous indignation and to turn towards accepting failure and pain as a learning process. He suggests that if people would honor their promises and commitments, view others with curiosity, and be willing to show up and give the other person space to have their own opinion, that businesses can be more successful. He also suggests that individuals will be happier in their personal lives if they are adhering to this kind of integrity at work.

He discusses being open to change and describes a person as a process of continually becoming more aware in order to make conscious choices. He suggests that businesses thrive and survive when they can develop an identity that can go with the flow when things change. Again, while this is written with the purpose of helping support business, it is such a powerful message for humankind. Interesting in talking about how these concepts apply to your workplace?
