Alyssa Choate, B.S. Social Media Maven

Alyssa Choate

I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a Bachelor of Science in psychology and a minor in classical humanities. During my freshman year, I shadowed the head psychiatrist of the Emergency Psychiatric Department, Dr. Angela Strain, and over the next few years at UNC, I continued to pursue my passion for psychology. I conducted multiple research studies, presented my findings at RTI International, and became a Gil Intern where I was paired with KKJ my junior year.

I am a first-generation college student and I come from a Greek immigrant household. I understand the struggles that first generation teenagers can undergo, and the barriers placed against them, all of which take a toll on their mental health. I am interested in learning how to treat adolescents from culturally diverse backgrounds, who may face various mental health disorders including mood, personality, eating, and anxiety disorders. I am also interested in learning about grief and couples counseling. I believe that mental health treatments should be personalized for every patient and that everyone deserves adequate mental health treatment regardless of gender, race, sexual orientation, or socio-economic status.

I plan to attend graduate school to continue my education in becoming a mental health counselor. You may see me working in my role as a psych tech, administering and sometimes observing psychological testing. You may also see me helping with workshops in the office or online. And lastly, you’ll definitely see me in our social media posts where I post and curate mental health content- go follow us on Facebook, LinkedIn, and on Instagram!

From Alyssa:
"I was born and raised in Charlotte, North Carolina and am proud to call the city my home. I love reading and am currently reading One Italian Summer by Rebecca Serle. My favorite authors include Madeline Miller and Richard Siken. I enjoy painting and frequenting art museums with friends and family. I also teach children’s classes in traditional Greek dance back home in Charlotte."
